I share a story from the Depression era in Texas nearly 100 years ago about a little girl had been taken to an orphanage when she was a baby.

The story was that they lived out in the country, and they were tenant farmers in a cotton field in Texas, and one night the house caught on fire. The father was trapped in the fire but the mother made her way through the flames to where her baby was and got the her out alive. The mother was horribly burned, so much so she never liked to appear in public.

She didn't want her baby to see her, but after this little baby grew up to be a little girl, the orphanage brought her to meet her mother.

They tried to prepare the little girl for her mother's condition, but when the child walked into the room and saw her mother, she began to scream. She ran out of the room terrified, and the mother sat and wept silently.

In the hallway the orphanage caretaker took the little girl aside, and as she was old enough to understand, asked "would you like to know why your mother looks like that?"

Yes, the little girl said between choking sobs, wiping her nose with a small, resolutely clenched fist and standing as tall as she could.

The caretaker said: "When you were a baby, your family's house caught on fire. Your mother could have gotten out safely, but you were inside, and you would have been burned to death like your father was. Because of her love for you, she ran through the flames. She covered you with a blanket, and you didn't even have the smell of smoke on you when the police brought you to us that night. Your mother survived but was horribly mutilated as you've seen her. She did that for you."

The little girl swiped her tears away and said "I want to go in".

She went back into her mother's room, walked up to her mother's distorted face of scars, threw her arms around her mothers neck began to kiss them.

She kissed every single one.

And then mother and daughter cried together, but with tears of joy, acceptance and love.

The story of the mother's sacrifice and the daughter's reaction is a parable for us In Christ. I heard someone say this week (I forget who or where) that we are closer to Hell now than we have ever been, and gauging this proximity by the temptation of fractiousness is stronger than ever, as I well know, being myself only too human.

We only walk in our own shoes, but as we do, every day offers a brand new opportunity to walk in our shoes - our sandals that are the preparation of the gospel of peace.

Human beings judge one another by their external actions. God judges them by their moral choices. When a neurotic who has a pathological horror of cats forces himself to pick up a cat for some good reason, it is quite possible that in God’s eyes he has shown more courage than a healthy man may have shown in winning the Victoria Cross.
When a man who has been perverted from his youth and taught that cruelty is the right thing, does some tiny little kindness, or refrains from some cruelty he might have committed, and thereby, perhaps, risks being sneered at by his companions, he may, in God’s eyes, be doing more than you and I would do if we gave up life itself for a friend.
It is as well to put this the other way round. Some of us who seem quite nice people may, in fact, have made so little use of a good heredity and a good upbringing that we are really worse than those whom we regard as fiends….That is why Christians are told not to judge. We see only the results which a man’s choices make out of his raw material. But God does not judge him on the raw material at all, but on what he has done with it. Most of the man’s psychological make-up is probably due to his body: when his body dies all that will fall off him, and the real central man, the thing that chose, that made the best or the worst out of this material, will stand naked. All sorts of nice things which we thought our own, but which were really due to a good digestion, will fall off some of us: all sorts of nasty things which were due to complexes or bad health will fall off others. We shall then, for the first time, see every one as he really was. There will be surprises." - C.S. Lewis, MERE CHRISTIANITY

We will all see the open gaps left by the nail that went his wrists, his ankles and His side where Longinus' speared. Scars throughout eternity, that he might present you without bondage, because He loves everyone, and gives everyone the chance to Love Him.

"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can make your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness arrayed, and with your feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer and petition. To this end, stay alert with all perseverance in your prayers for all the saints." - Ephesians 6:10-18
