I don’t know whose child that is above, or whether this baby is now dead or alive. Like the human knit in the womb by Jehovah, this message as the media reverberates the abominations of the Abortion Van outside of the Democratic National Convention August 19th and 20th. This isn’t news to my readers, but an assemblage to deepen the spiritual incision with compositional elements given to me by The Holy Spirit and woven together obediently, without being afraid to do what the peace in my heart tells me to. A Brief History of Abortion

The Sentences of Pseudo-Phocylides 184–186 (c. 50 B.C. - A.D. 50) says that “a woman should not destroy the unborn in her belly, nor after its birth throw it before the dogs and vultures as a prey.”
Included among those who do evil in the apocalyptic Sibylline Oracles were women who “aborted what they carried in the womb”.
The apocryphal book 1 Enoch (2nd or 1st century B.C.) declares that an evil angel taught humans how to “smash the embryo in the womb”.
The first-century historian Josephus wrote that “the law orders all the offspring to be brought up, and forbids women either to cause abortion or to make away with the fetus” (Against Apion 2.202).
In Roman culture Cicero (106–43 B.C.) records that according to the Twelve Tables of Roman Law, “deformed infants shall be killed” (De Legibus 3.8).
Plutarch (c. a.d. 46–120) spoke of those who he said “offered up their own children, and those who had no children would buy little ones from poor people and cut their throats as if they were so many lambs or young birds; meanwhile the mother stood by without a tear or moan” (Moralia 2.171D).
The Didache 2.2 (c. A.D. 85–110) commands “thou shalt not murder a child by abortion nor kill them when born.” Another noncanonical early Christian text, the Letter of Barnabas 19.5 (c. A.D. 130), said: “You shall not abort a child nor, again, commit infanticide.”
The apostle Luke (a physician) points to fetal personhood when he observes that the unborn John the Baptist “leaped for joy” in his mother’s womb when Elizabeth came into the presence of Mary, who was pregnant with Jesus at the time (Luke 1:44).
More than merely condemning abortion and infanticide, the early Christians provided alternatives by rescuing and adopting children who were abandoned. Callistus (d. c. A.D. 223) provided refuge to abandoned children by placing them in Christian homes, and Benignus of Dijon (3rd century) offered nourishment and protection to abandoned children, including some with disabilities caused by unsuccessful abortions.

(Continuing to weave another Truth tapesty) Since the late Seventies I have frequented thrift shops, flea markets and even trash-picked when a treasure was obvious. I walked past this antique doll semi-buried in a cardboard box of donated clothes half-covered by unwanted dresses on a clothing rack in a no-name small town for three weeks before buying her for $10.00. “The Amish have been looking at her”, the shopkeeper said, when I carried her gently like a newborn baby to the counter. Leaving the store a couple with a toddler girl walking in front of them approached to pass on the sidewalk. The at-most 20-month old child stopped mid-step with her face lighting up and hand raised finger pointing to the doll and said “BABY!’ I held the doll cradled in the crook of my left arm lower for her to be face-to-face with it. “BABY!”, she exclaimed with happiness, and she turned and walked on in a visible infusion of mastery and awareness and self-cognition with confidence. It was an unforgetabble parable illustrating our human species and our meaning.

I took the doll home (my 20’ including tongue length camper) and set her next to where I sit and work daily, the bench seat at the table, my ‘desk’ and work area. Every word I have written since March 2022 has been written here. As I examined the doll I discovered her head was made of a two-part mold and about to separate. Her Azure Blue eyes still opened and closed, however, when sitting up or laid down. Her jointed body had integrity so long as I dared not disturb her original underclothing of thick ivory-colored wool knit. Her composite face, skull, arms and legs were flaking terribly; skin cracked as enamel does over years. I dared not look for a name beneath the clothing. She is in as found condition save for the coats of Mod Podge satin I applied over the course of a week, paying special attention to repair her split skull, and to seal her eye area without affecting the human hair lashes and eye movements.

Although the dolls I used to have are gone due to my ex-husband the no-longer-so-secretly-crossdressing-transgender-Washington-DC-newsman stealing my belongings in the legalized theft Baltimore County called a divorce, the meaning and cathartic healing I experienced as an artist working with them is both a cerebral and muscle memory that cannot be taken from me. Just as we are told in scripture, the loss we endure refines us and prayerfully my writing helps others in these last days of earth.

The sonogram image of this mystery child was a sign given to me in the same obscure shop less than two weeks after finding the doll and less than two days after the Democratic National Convention-hosted abortions. I walked into the thrift shop’s small, stacked-floor-to-ceiling book room, and directly to my right at eye level was this small pieve of paper sitting on the shelf, obviously fallen out of or taken from a donated book. It struck my heart like a lightningbolt, for it was clear to see the baby’s head, arms, hands and feet, and I wondered if it was alive or dead, the date on it 2006 - a year younger than my oldest granddaughter, Emily. With care I placed it in between pages of the notebook I carry in my ‘purse’ (for want of a better term, a satchel, for I am certainly not fashionable, an anathematic word in the first place as the only One I want to fashion me is YHVH). As I drove ‘home’, I felt something gestating spiritually.

Self-portrait, 1997 I am wearing a porcelain doll found in a yard in the once elite-now ‘gentrified’ neighborhood called Roland Park in Baltimore, Maryland. In my hands is one of two mechanical dolls which appeared on the top of trash in a dumpster viewable from my window. I began working with dolls in my artwork, mining the depths of child abuse existentially and practically; handling their ‘bodies’ in a recontextual manner. As a child, my mother refused to allow me to have a Barbie doll “because it was ‘dirty’”. On a visceral level it was cathartic: how much of that was sensorial, and how much genetic memory? Surely it was induced biologically as a female. Gender IS binary.

The doll to the left is the mechanical doll I am holding in the self-portrait above. On the right is a thrift store doll I covered with python skin. I once kept snakes as pets, something which I am not proud to admit. Most interesting to consider is that the doll invented by Mattel was called Barbie, which means "Alien”, and the accompanying doll “Lilly”, for Lilith, a demon. The Ken doll reflects kindred roots. Kindred is the miscegenated progeny of Nephilim mating with human women destroying the human race with the seed of the Serpent, Lucifer.

The next thing I knew it was like I was in a different space where the walls and ceiling were non-existent and by my left hip was a small child in a silhouetted 3/4 view, and it was stroking my arm and comforting me for what I had done. And I woke up immediately and the room was 3D-normal and I realized it had been a visitation of one of my children in Heaven. I wept.
