Revelation 17:15: “Then the angel said to me, “The waters you saw (where the prostitute is seated) are peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages.” κάθημαι – kathēmai – kath’-ay-maheeF.
From G2596 and ἧμαι hēmai (to sit; akin to the base of G1476); to sit down; figuratively to remain, reside: – dwell, sit (by, down). Cognate: G2516, G2521, G2523
The initial key to unlocking Revelation 17 is the word “sits” (or “seated”, as in Rev 17:15). It’s the same word in all 3 occurrences above.
Straightaway, one can see what the “beast” is composed of. I’m not going to spell it out for you – if you can’t see it, so be it.
So, let’s dig a bit deeper. Something to notice is that the word “peoples” in verse 15 is this: λαός – laos – lah-os’. Apparently a primary word; a people (in general; thus differing from G1218, which denotes one’s own populace): – people.
Looking at G1218: δῆμος – dēmos – day’-mos
From G1210; the public (as bound together socially): people.Cognate: G1218, G1553, G1736, G3927That’s a subtle but hugely important distinction which separates public social cohesion from just “a people”.
